Some Marlin For the Kids and My Personal Best Flounder

Some Marlin For the Kids and My Personal Best Flounder

I just got back from another fantastic trip aboard the Katie B with Captain Gordie, Kevin Twilley, Mike, Micah, Chris and Zach fishing the Nantucket Shoals for fluke….aka summer flounder.  We had a limit of fat fish with several 5-7 pounders and I won our fish pool with my new personal best flounder at 29.5” and 9 pounds.  It was an awesome trip!

The crew of the Marli with Captain Mark Hoos and the Hoos clan had a fantastic day fishing. The kids, Classic with two white marlin releases and a yellowfin tuna.

the crew of the Boss Hogg with Captain Brian Porter had a great day with a pile of yellowfin tuna and then took a picture in the pouring rain at Sunset Marina.

Captain Jason Mumford of Lucky Break had some nice trips today with keeper Flounder and keep her tall dog going home with happy clients.

rich Daiker and Kenny Schoen fished ocean structured today and caught their limit of Flounder in a nice trigger fish.

Captain  Monty Hawkins of the Morning Star had all of the conditions on today’s trip.

Dark gray skies with intermittent drizzle and rain made for a less than splendid departure this morning. We ambled on off to our newly sunken barge at Ringmaster’s Reef Group where Mom/Sarah and Jonah deployed a small block unit on the barge’s concrete deck – the first of what will become many..
From there? Eastward.
Rain, heavy at times, lead the way. On my radar I could see we were going to lose it about time we began fishing though.
Did.
But the wind – forecast at around 10 knots stayed on a while.
It wasn’t less ten though.
Near double I think.
Pretty saucy for a summer crowd.
Fished & fished – spot after spot.
Small pieces I’ve not dropped on yet this year–normally excellent–showed nothing. Didn’t even try em.
Nick one now and again most everywhere else. Some short fluke, red hake, throwback cbass and a few keeper sea bass. Carlos, working a Saturday rail by himself, never took a pic while fishing.
SSE winds began falling out about 11:15. Just as I was anchoring on a large wreck it switched SSW and, almost instantly, seas began to fall out.
Didn’t help the bite any, but I suspect a few stomachs were glad of it.
Worked at it all day without much reward. Amy, at least, had something to brag about with her pool winning sea bass.
Rain gave us a pass the whole time we were fishing – then a monsoon when we tied up!!
Will try again tomorrow!
Cheers,
Monty
