Today may just be the day that we have been so patiently waiting to hear about. After weeks and weeks of being teased by reports of awesome rockfishing off the coast of New Jersey, and the occasional report of some fish around the MD/DE line, today I received the following report from my buddy Juan Franzetti about his rockfish trip.
We joined the gang off of Cape May this morning and trolled around for while, no bites. We ran south and found another group of boats with whales feeding on bunker. Trolled in that mix for a while, had lunch, and still no bites. We decided to head home empty handed. On the way home we saw birds just off the beach around mid-town OC. We put out 5 lines and had 4 fish in the boat in 10 minutes…..only 1/2 mile of beach! We had a 5th fish on too but lost it at the boat. I heard they were banging them off little gull too. Crazy day!
Juan’s 12 year old son, and proven flounder slayer, Lucas joined the 40 pound rockfish club today with a beautiful 41.2 pounder.
Juan, Lucas, Robert Remo and Michael Snedaker ended up having a great day with the rockfish and as you can see from the pictures, they were slobs!
Some of the boats fishing the 3rd Annual Ocean City Marlin Club Rockfish Tournament got in to the big boys today as well. There was a major change in the leader board with some 40 pound fish that will be tough to beat….but, with the weather expected to be nice through the weekend, and fish of this size just outside the inlet…anything is possible.
Here’s what the leader board looks like after a major shake up on day 7.
In other “on the water” news, Captain John Prather and crew on the Ocean City Guide Service put the kaibosh on some sea ducks today and ended up with a four man limit. There was one casualty in the mix as a decoy was sacrificed by some wayward shot. Captain John charters for sea ducks if you’re interested. Check him out at www.fishinoc.com/ocguideservice
